THIS WAS MADE FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES

At Cascara Roasting Co., coffee is a ritual worth slowing down for.

Cascara Roasting Co. was born from a love of slow mornings, shared rituals, and coffee made with intention. For founders Remington and Clarice, coffee is more than a drink; it’s a gathering place, a rhythm, and a craft shaped by tradition. Rooted in Bozeman, Montana, Cascara honors origin and craftsmanship, blending vintage sensibility with modern refinement. From roast to packaging, every detail is designed to feel collected over time, tactile, familiar, and meant to live proudly on your counter.

PROBLEM

In today’s fast-paced coffee market, Cascara Roasting Co. identified a gap for brands that evoke comfort, nostalgia, and story. Consumers, often young adults and families, are seeking intentional living, slow rituals, and products with soul, yet few coffee brands combine these values with timeless, crafted aesthetics. The challenge was to create a vintage-inspired identity that feels both familiar and refined, bridging memory, calm, and modern appeal.

SOLUTION

To fill the gap for comfort, nostalgia, and story in the coffee market, a cohesive, vintage-inspired brand for Cascara Roasting Co was crafted. It blends memory, craftsmanship, and modern sensibility. The identity reflects the founders’ love of slow mornings and intentional rituals, bringing their story, the folklore of coffee, and Montana’s rugged warmth to life. Packaging was designed as a tactile, collectible experience, reusable tins with wraparound stickers that preserve freshness and serve as display-worthy objects. The roastery and café invite customers to taste and connect with the coffee firsthand, fostering a sense of community and shared ritual. Across identity, storytelling, and physical design, the brand communicates intentional living, craftsmanship, and the enduring magic of coffee.

FOLKLORE

Long before coffee traveled the world, there was a story born in the mountains of Ethiopia. A young goat herder named Kaldi noticed his flock dancing with sudden energy after eating bright red coffee cherries. Curious, he shared the fruit with nearby monks, who soon discovered its ability to keep them awake through long hours of prayer.

That moment, driven by curiosity, ritual, and discovery, marked the beginning of coffee’s journey. The story of Kaldi became folklore, passed down alongside the craft itself, reminding us that coffee has always been about more than caffeine. It is about awareness, connection, and care.

At Cascara, this folklore lives on. The mountain goats roaming the ranges around Bozeman serve as a quiet echo of Kaldi’s dancing herd, a symbol of energy, joy, and the enduring magic found in a simple cup of coffee.

OUTCOMES + TAKEAWAYS
This self-initiated project challenged me to build a complete brand from the ground up, from brief to execution. With full creative freedom, I developed a cohesive identity, packaging system, and narrative rooted in story and community. Designing for physical packaging pushed me to think beyond flat layouts, considering form, function, and how the design translates in the real world. Ultimately, the project strengthened my ability to craft intentional brand stories that resonate and foster connection.
